Wool fiber is naturally breathable. They can absorb a large amount of water vapor and evaporate it, making wool clothes less tight and more comfortable than clothes made of other fibers.

Wool can reduce the speed of skin cooling and the severity of cold after exercise, from uncomfortable to dangerous. When you stop exercising in very cold conditions, the cooling time of synthetic clothing is three times faster than that of wool clothing. This is because the wool fiber retains – and only slowly releases – the moisture in its structure, helping to maintain higher skin temperatures and less rapid cooling.

Unlike most synthetic fibers, wool is hygroscopic. It absorbs water vapor in the surrounding environment more effectively than other common clothing fibers. Wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight before it feels moist and close to the skin. When absorption occurs, the wool will release heat, making the wearer feel warmer and dry in the cold and humid environment. One kilogram of dry wool can release the heat equivalent to eight hours of electric blanket operation.

In a warm environment, wool fabrics feel twice as hot as synthetic fibers because wool transfers more heat from the skin. In hot and dry conditions, wool keeps you cool by transferring moisture from the skin and evaporating it. Compared with polyester fabric, wool fabric can reduce the humidity of skin by 25%, which is equivalent to the decrease of ambient temperature by up to 4 ℃.
